Kerala name changed to Keralam?

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution urging the Center to officially change the name of the state to ‘Keralam’. The proposal was introduced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who urged the central government to change the name of the state to ‘Kerala’ in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

The resolution was accepted by the Congress-led UDF opposition, which did not suggest any amendments or modifications to it. Thereafter, it was declared unanimously adopted by the Assembly on the basis of a show of hands by Speaker AN Shamseer.

Moving the resolution, the Chief Minister said that the state was called ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam, but it was still Kerala in other languages. He said that the need for a united Kerala for the Malayalam-speaking communities had emerged strongly since the time of the national freedom struggle.

“But in the first schedule of the constitution, the name of our state is written as Kerala.” He said, “This Assembly unanimously requests the Central Government to take immediate steps to modify it as ‘Keralam’ under Article 3 of the Constitution and to rename it in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution”. be made ‘Keralam’.”
